About us

Welcome to the Cogsmouth Chronicle as we present our inaugural event ...

As our first event, the team at the Chronicle have decided to keep it small bur interesting. Set within a museum that has Victorian storefronts and cobbled streets, we found a unique space to fill our imaginations.

Inspired by the venue's current exhibition and the themes of persuasion, propaganda, marketing & advertising in the Victorian era, we have developed a weekend that everyone can enjoy.

We invite you to spend some time with us for Empire for Sale and experience everything we - and the Abbey House Museum in Leeds - has to offer.

The Why

In 2017, Gregg McNeill and I began our wonderful journey through Steampunk as Darkbox Images.

In November 2023, we attended the last ever Steampunks in Space event at The National Space Centre. We realised there would be a hole where Steampunks in Space should have been in 2024.

An idea bounces around the brains of three traders, lamenting the loss of a fantastic event. Through a series of conversations with like-minded people, Steampunks, traders & other friends, we came up with our plan:
The Cogsmouth Chronicle presents..."Empire for Sale".

The Plan

The Cogsmouth Chronicle was created as a different way to advertise events that we want to put together. The paper is a vehicle to promote each event we do ; including a schedule of events, adverts for each of our traders, any articles or posts you, as readers, want to include plus much more.

All the events we have been to ourselves, have consistently been in the same location - mostly because the organisers are based in the area and there is an established Steampunk community. This is a great and wise choice.

However, we had always planned to create a 'travelling weekend' - where our events would visit different areas of the country and reach a wider audience of 'punks'.

We also decided to explore different parts of the UK - working together with partners, such as the British Library, to create weekend events that fuel your imaginations.

This year, we are in Leeds - the home of tea-duelling, Marks & Spencers, the spring loaded mouse trap and the first silent film from 1888.

Next year, we could be in Liverpool, York, or elsewhere in the country, in an alternative location.

So, if you have any suggestions, please let us know.

There will be a suggestion box by the Music Station upstairs, in the Exhibition Space.

Follow the Cogsmouth Chronicle to find out where we go next...

At the Chronicle, we want to help establish events that people choose to go to - where they can feel inspired and creative. We want to produce events where people can come and be themselves.

So, come and meet our team - without whom the Cogsmouth Chronicle, Empire for Sale and this entire concept of a travelling event - would not exist.
